Chief killed in Eastern Lakes cattle raid: official

Eastern Lakes State executive chief Mading Anhimen was on Monday shot dead by suspected bandits from Western Lakes, a local official said.

Simon Adok Tueny, the state’s local government minister, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the bandits were on a mission to steal cattle when they killed the chief at a grazing area between Aluak-luak, Ngop and Yirol counties.

The government official further said the assailants made away with more than 200 cows, adding that the attackers escaped to Western Lakes after the incident.

He pointed out that that tension has since gripped the area after the incident as residents are now living in fear. Adok urged residents to remain calm as state authorities together with Western Lakes officials pursue the culprits.

“It is our responsibility as government of Eastern Lakes State to investigate the incident and apprehend the penetrators,” he stressed,

“Our counterparts in Western Lakes State are playing the same role of pursuing the culprits and hopefully they will be arrested,” he said.

The minister stressed that tough penalties will be implemented against anyone who violates the recommendations adopted by the neighboring states at the recent peace conference in Yirol town.
